Joe’s Tuesday Tips
***8.24 Swindon – Alright Gordy (6pts) 4/6
**8.49 Central Park – Anthony (4pts) 5/2
*7.39 Central Park – Marvellous Mabel (2pts) 11/4
Open race action at Swindon tonight adds a bit of spice to the evening cards.
Tuesday Nap
The nap of the evening runs in the Blunsdon Stayers at 8.24pm where trap six Alright Gordy should have too much for his rivals. A classy and versatile type who competes over six and eight bends, Alright Gordy’s last run over C&D was back in October when he beat Ballymac Loca by four and three-quarter lengths and Ballymac Mags by 7 and three-quarter lengths. They both re-opppose this evening so as long as Alright Gordy avoids any bother with Millridge Tanic, his class should see him prevail with a strong running, dominant display.
Tuesday Next Best
The next best of the evening runs in the A1 at Central Park at 8.49pm. Trap six Anthony has been running with real credit in defeat against the best graded greyhounds on the track so although he stays in A1 grade, this looks a much more comfortable assignment. He can pick up a deserved first victory in top grade company at the eighth time of asking. He needs to avoid King Pavarotti on his immediate inside and if doing so looks a big player and can make his impressive runs in defeat worthwhile with success tonight.
Final Selection
The third bet of the evening runs in the 491m handicap at Central Park at 7.39pm. Trap five Marvellous Mabel is yet to recapture her best form since returning to the track following seasonal rest but a handicap race might be what it takes to light the spark. She is receiving three meters on Iomhair who is off the back and that can prove decisive. She is a strong running sort with plenty of impressive six bend runs so if the gaps appear for Marvellous Mabel at the right time, she can weave her way though to return to winning ways.
Weekend Review
Jonathan Hobbs and Joe Conneely take a look back over the action from the weekend
Lambe’s Wizard the Nottingham star
The return to six bends saw Billis Wizard back to his best.
The son of Droopys Sydney has long looked a nice type with last night his fifth win in 15 starts. This was by far the stiffest test of stamina in his career so far for John Lambe and he saw it out well after his 28.44 Perry Barr natural speed saw him well clear by halfway.
William Russell took the other six bend contest with Magical Bertie. He won a pair of 500m races at the track in November, returning to keep his unbeaten record intact. A 500m contest went to another promising type in Quill Quids for Esther Driver. The May 23 pup bolted up in an A4 on debut at Monmore, winning an open at the third time of asking. A sprint open went to Starcash Best for Neil Chapman.
ARC Northern Puppy Derby Semis
Two days until the semis of the ARC Northern Puppy Derby. The market has it as wide open as it was before the opening round! There was sad news yesterday for the Sean White team as Broadway Shay was withdrawn lame, leaving trap one vacant in the third semi.
Tom Heilbron’s twin attack on the semi
Heilbron has both Deliverooo and Innfield Pepe in Thursday’s semi-final contests.
Heilbron said “Deliverooo’s a really nice pup with plenty of early pace,” said Tom. “He’s been drawn in a tough semi final and will need to be on his toes at the boxes but he has every chance.
“We’re still learning about him each day. He’s responding well to work, and his weight is coming on well – he could be one with serious ability.
“Right now, it’s too early to say what his ideal trip will be but I wouldn’t rule out any standard distance. What we do know is he loves Newcastle and gets every yard of the 480m.
“Ben (Collins, owner) is a real gent and deserves a bit of good fortune so fingers crossed Deliverooo can do that for him.”
“Innfield Pepe ran a screamer to qualify. He missed the kick and got caught in traffic so you’d like to think he’ll improve for the semi finals where he can’t afford to run the way he did on Thursday again.”

McPhillips making a great impression
Star Pelaw trainer Ben McPhillips has made a quick start to the year.
Four runners at Star Pelaw on Sunday resulted in four winners for the Scottish kennel. They included unbeaten puppy Aero Donishall who has now won A7, A5, A3 and a maiden open in four career starts. His litter sister Aero Sophie is also in the care of McPhillips and made up part of the winning four-timer.
Bill Glass tribute from Dave Quinn and funeral details
‘I first had the pleasure of meeting my old friend Bill Glass when I took up my first racing office position as a very impressionable 17 year old at Hackney. Although I had vast experience of the training side (being the son of Pat Quinn) I was very wet behind the ears, but also very keen. A trait I think Bill spotted quickly.
We quickly became friends, through a combined love of greyhound racing, and also live music, Bill playing it, me merely watching. Bill, I soon learned, was someone I could rely on to give me his honest opinion, whether or not it was what I wanted to hear. I often used him as a sounding board, either trackside, or whilst I was ferrying him to various gigs.
We had some great laughs over the years, and always put the world to rights over a drink or two. Bill was a very loyal and true friend, and absolutely doted on his wife Molly, and daughter Alex, in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a prouder man than when Alex came into his and Molly’s world.
I learned a great deal about the man I should be simply by spending time with Bill, an inherently good man, and I will miss my old friend very much indeed. Sleep tight Bill.’
Bill’s funeral is at 2pm on March 7.

Doreen Walsh has passed away
The ex-Hove trainer was 87.
From 1952 when joining the kennel of Reg Birch until December 2018 when having her final runners, Doreen Walsh was a greyhound racing fixture. Head girl to George Curtis in the 1960s and 1970s, Walsh broke new ground when becoming the first female trainer at Hove in 1975. She was a much respected part of the Hove racing community who was known for her love of the dogs. RIP
