Winter Derby standard set by Queen Georgia
Inside runners well on top during the heats which will make for some tricky semis.
Half of the heats went to the red jacketed runner, including the three quickest on the night. Queen Georgia is a remarkable performer who stays six bends but can set the quickest time of the opening round of a 480m Cat One as well, 28.32. Untold Ruble set the early fractions but she was vulnerable when the ‘wrong dog’ turned behind her off the second bend.
Just four spots slower was Millbank Boiler for Gemma Evans. He was producing some flying times at Romford in December and brought that form to Monmore, clocking 28.36. A winner from traps three, four and five at London Road, that at least gives him a helping hand in a draw full of railers.
A red jacket clean sweep of the three quickest winners was started by Gary The Arb in the opening heat. Belinda Green’s hound has been setting the standard at the track at recent Saturday meetings. 28.43 was his time in a race where he had to come from off the speed.
The winning performance of the night came from Maxine Locke’s Droopys Pivotel. He looked to have been bumped out of the competition at the opening bend but not only did he find his way back into a qualifying spot, he claimed the win in 28.46.
Heat four had looked the best when the draw had been made but trouble saw the biggest priced winner of the night. Take nothing away from Michael Burton’s Droopys Suprstar as he backed up last week’s win with a 28.53 victory. The competition lost Droopys Eunice, Churchfield Syd and El Tornillo in this heat.
The slowest of the heat winners on the night was Kilmore Dancer for Mark Wallis in 28.56. He could’ve gone quicker but for a conversation with Nowitsmyturn on the run-in. ‘Eased and crowded and led near line’ were the official comments. He was very lucky to get away without at least an awkward mark on his card.
The draw for the semi-finals will be made on Monday.

King Memphis at Monmore last night
There were some decent trials ahead of the Ladbrokes Winter Derby action.

Greyhound Racing UK Northamptonshire Sprint
The opening round of the Cat Two sprint is this afternoon.
In case you missed it earlier, we have a preview of the six heats from Jonathan Hobbs and Joe Conneely here along with runner-by-runner comments for each dog in action.
Sheffield and Pelaw also have open action today
Acomb Felix is already 4/4 on the year and looks to have a great chance to extend that sequence for Kevin Ferguson in Sheffield’s 3.09. The kennel also have Acomb Irene in the following ladies’ race with a big chance.
At Pelaw, it is once more the sprint contest that looks the pick of the action. Peter Richardson’s Laughil Flash is back from a week off to take on Chloe Hardy’s Bramble Oreo, who flew around in last week’s sprint in the 7.04. Hardy could have a decent night with Unanimous Kai in the 8.16 also holding solid claims.
Other Saturday open results

There were three opens on the Monmore undercard. Romeo Tomcat again impressed for Patrick Janssens, just a spot slower than Queen Georgia. Bowmers Wildcat for Paul Young and Santas Amigo for David Mullins won the other two opens.
A single open at Central Park went to Julie Luckhurst’s One More Tune. We suggested in round up yesterday that the race should be run to suit her strong-running style and so it proved, winning impressively in 29.97 on a track rated -30.
Doncaster was dominated by Phil Milner who won three of the four opens on the card. Keefill Maverick was the star of the night, running riot in 27.54. Droopys Glam and Keefill Vale added the other two wins. The other open saw a 20/1 shock as Bluey Boy scored for William Link, though he had been the 7/4 favourite in a maiden just seven days prior!
Tote Gold Cup semi-finalists known
Carrick Aldo and Seven Beach met in the last quarter-final with the 28.25 winning time for the former by far the quickest of the four contests. Aldo set the early fractions and that was all that was required to hold off his main rival.
The other three quarter-final contests were all won by less than a length. Hawkfield Blue outstayed Grangeclare Lady in 28.36 in the closest of them. The winner was an Irish Derby quarter-finalist last year. Kerogue Lady was a spot quicker winner than Phoenix Memphis in the other two contests.
