The winner of the Shelbourne award last week was Seven Beach. He was no match for Carrick Aldo in the Tote Gold Cup on Saturday night. The pair were Irish Derby semi-finalists last year, with Aldo also making that stage in this competition. Connections will be looking for more luck at the weekend than he had at this stage 12 months ago.
Hollyhill Pad took off at Cork on Saturday. He had looked a solid pup prior but his 28.09 was a clear career-best by a considerable margin. A quick break saw him straight on the bunny and that has made a big difference to him.
A pair of dams to note this week are Whitings Gift and Cloncunny Peecee who both have two offspring in the list from separate litters. The Other Wild is yet to taste defeat in four career starts, picking up the final of the Rural Kennels Unraced at Clonmel. The May ’23 whelp has serious early gears, clocking a 2.77 split in his win.
His half-brother Born Racer is already well known as the Fair Warrior winner last year, winning at Thurles last week. Their half-sister, 2022 Irish Oaks runner-up Scooby Duchess, is a mum herself now with a 13-month old litter by Grangeview Ten who could be worth looking out for.
Cloncunny Peecee has had two litters with Second Treasure her top offspring so far. He was in winning form at Dundalk last week his ninth win from his last 11 starts. His younger half-brother Swithins Jim took home the Waterford award, making it 2/2 at the track.
Crafty Bondi is a back-to-back winner on the list. She has hit form with a vengeance at Tralee so far this year, unbeaten in three starts there. She has a July 23 half-sister Crafty Fritto who has joined the Paul Young ranks.
